Ensuring quality outcomes through rigorous testing
One of the most powerful aspects of the computational ability available to us today is the testing of design proposals (at any scale) to enable verification with great accuracy as to whether the design can perform as proposed. “Performance” in this sense can mean anything from climatic performance to compliance with planning policies. In all cases, the power of computation is its deployment of generating multiple and extensive iterations to ensure that, in any circumstance, this performance can be verified. As well as testing propositions, these tools can also be applied to existing structures and places in order to isolate opportunities and challenges during the design process.
Designs are performance-tested via a series of tools to ensure that they achieve required benchmarks and fulfill compliance requirements. From here, the design is also rigorously iterated to test if these results can be improved. Information gathered during performance-testing is often tabulated to allow comparison between iterations and, depending on the project, enabling scoring of alternate options.
